Interview with Healthline editor, Christal Yuen

Christal Yuen, Healthline
Christal Yuen (she/her) Wellness + Beauty Editor, Healthline.com.

Christal Yuen is the beauty and wellness editor for Healthline.com, a site that I’ve enjoyed writing for. I had a chance to speak with Christal for the ASJA Direct podcast, and she shared the following.

  • *What kinds of articles work best on Healthline and why?
  • What she looks for in a pitch?
  • What differentiates Healthline from other online pubs focused on health and medical information? Hint: All Healthline articles go through medical review.
  • Submission tips for writers?

She also shared some personal tidbits as well for this site.

EE: What is your favorite movie and why?

CY: It changes from time to time… but my favorite movie tends to be the one I can rewatch for a good while. Recently it’s been Swiss Army Man, and I’m just saying that because I need more people to watch and appreciate it’s genius.

EE: What do you love to do for fun?

CY: I love to walk my dog in the park or by the beach. The ideal day usually involves walking about a mile to the local bar, getting a drink and reading for an hour or two, before heading to the beach.

EE: Are you a dark chocolate or milk chocolate fan? Why?

CY: Dark chocolate! Milk chocolate is too sweet for me, and dark chocolate has such complex and nuanced flavors, a small bit goes a long way. Dark chocolate is also full of nutrients that can be of benefit to the body. Checking out health Youtube channels like nucific can be a great reference to find out what other healthy foods are out there that we do not know about.

EE: What did you want to be when you grew up? Did your current role come close?

CY: When I was very, very young, I wanted to be a doctor, but for most of my life, I wanted to be a writer. So I’d like to think I’m very close!

EE: What was the last book you read and did you enjoy it? Why or why not?

CY: Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. It was amazing and I’m not sure how I went so long without reading his works – it’s the kind of book that makes you want to jump back to page one and start again because the journey happened faster than understanding it.
